Winemaker Kathy Malone
Hillside Winery & Bistro
Veteran Winemaker Kathy Malone brings out the best in Hillside Wine by respecting and showcasing the fruit of these vines, with gentle touch and minimal intervention.
Our flagship wine MOSAIC was the inspiration for our winemaker to move toward sourcing only locally grown Naramata grapes. Kathy’s understanding of the unique conditions of the Naramata Bench caused her to direct her focus to the local terroirs. Since 2013, our entire portfolio is crafted from 100% Naramata grown and raised fruit.

In 1979, the property was purchased by Bohumir and Vera Klokocka who had recently immigrated to the Okanagan Valley from Czechoslovakia. Vera had a vision of growing grapes on the property despite having no experience. In 1984 she and Bohumir pulled out the apricot trees and planted 3.5 acres of vineyards. The first row of grapes was her experimental row; with 20-30 varieties planted. Vera finally decided to plant Muscat Ottonel, a varietal native to her home country. Gamay Noir was also planted – some of the oldest in the province.
It is our belief that great wines start in the vineyard, and to this end, we use only the best quality fruit available from our twenty acres of grapes densely planted on hillside terraces surrounding the winery. We also have partnerships with select vineyards along the Naramata Bench. It has been our commitment since our inception to produce hand-crafted, naturally fruit-forward, well-balanced wines that represent the true character of the grapes. Our uniquely designed winery allows us to ferment and age the wine in many small batches to maintain the varietal character and integrity of each grape type and vineyard.
